Summer Chair Information
Summer Chair Responsibilities
Summer Chairs are appointed by their departments to collaborate with the Office of Summer & Special Academic Programs (SSAP) about summer course offerings. They must be in residence during their contract period and are responsible for:
- Communicating regularly with the SSAP Team
- Coordinating the summer course schedule
- Advising students
- Informing instructors about policies and procedures
- Answering questions from faculty
- Assisting with academic issue resolution
Stipends are available for chairs not on 12-month contracts. In the Schools of Architecture and Engineering, an academic dean assumes chair duties.

Complete the spreadsheet below with the information for your department, school, or area. Proposals are due to summer@virginia.edu by November 14, 2025. Include your department name in the subject line of the email.

Student Employee Descriptions and Wages
Note: Enrollment of 20 students or more is required to hire an assistant or a grader.
UG Assistant: $18.00/hour, up to 60 hours/session
An Undergraduate Teaching Assistant is an academically qualified and registered student who assists the supervising faculty member with course delivery. Responsibilities may include assisting the supervising faculty member with the delivery discussion, or laboratory that supplements faculty lectures and by grading assignments or examinations at the direction of the supervising faculty member.
Graduate Grader: $975/session
A Graduate Grader is an academically qualified graduate student who provides administrative support to the supervising faculty member. Responsibilities generally include the grading of homework, papers, laboratory reports, or examinations at the direction of the supervising faculty member.
Graduate Teaching Assistant: $1540/session
A Graduate Teaching Assistant is an academically qualified graduate student who assists the supervising faculty member with course delivery. Responsibilities include assisting the supervising faculty member by delivering discussion, laboratory, or quiz sections that supplement faculty lectures and by grading assignments or examinations at the direction of the supervising faculty member.
