- Ch. 31 / Veteran Readiness and Employment
- Ch. 30 / 1606 Montgomery GI Bill®
For Summer Session, students in most programs must be enrolled in 6 credits during the same session to receive full benefits (MHA/stipends). Contact the Military Educational Benefits (MEB) team in the Office of the University Registrar (UREG) for more information about how to utilize your benefits, in-state residency through the Choice Act*, or Military Priority Enrollment.

Please note: Military educational benefits will impact certain financial aid eligibility. They will be included as a financial resource in your financial aid offer and may reduce Virginia state grants, University grants, and private loans. Each financial aid offer type is different, so the military education benefit may affect each person’s offer differently. Before using benefits, please contact Student Financial Services for questions about how your military education benefits may impact your financial aid at sfs@virginia.edu or (434) 982-5300.
*Veteran and Active Duty students should work with the Office of Virginia Status first to determine eligibility for in-state status. Dependents may work with the Military Educational Benefits team for in-status via the Choice Act.
**GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government website.

Comprehensive Fee
Students enrolled in any in-person academic study during Summer Session pay the comprehensive fee in addition to tuition. This fee supports access to University services and facilities for the full summer term, including student health services, classrooms and academic facilities, recreational and athletic facilities, University Transit, and technology resources. A full breakdown of the services included in the comprehensive fee is available through UVA Finance.
Once assessed, these services are available from the start of the summer term through its conclusion, regardless of which session a student's courses fall in.
Online & Off‑Grounds Courses
Students taking only online courses or courses held outside UVA Charlottesville are not charged the comprehensive fee. Instead, they pay the Off‑Grounds Fee for Special Academic Programs, which is $12 per credit.
Student Account Charges
Total charges may include past‑due balances (e.g., tuition from prior terms, parking fines, library fines) along with Summer Session tuition and fees.
Additional Comprehensive Fee Information
The comprehensive fee is a single, per-term charge assessed when a student enrolls in at least one on-Grounds summer course. For students enrolled before the start of the summer term, payment is due shortly after the term begins. For students who enroll after the term has started, payment is due 3 days from the date of enrollment.
The comprehensive fee follows its own refund schedule, separate from tuition. This separation helps ensure that access to services remains available over the course of the summer term. Students can view their specific billing, due dates, and payment information in their UVAPay account (accessed via SIS). For questions about billing, payment, or refunds, contact UVA OneStop.
Students who take only online courses or courses at a location other than UVA in Charlottesville do not pay the comprehensive fee. They pay the Off-Grounds Fee for Special Academic Programs at a per-credit-hour rate.
