For UVA Students
How can I take summer session courses?
I’m enrolled full-time in a degree program (as of spring 2025)
If you are currently enrolled in a degree program, and attended courses at the University during Spring 2025 you need not apply for Summer Session unless you are graduating in May. (Note that this does not include the Summer Language Institute, which requires both current and visiting students to fill out the SLI application.)
I’m receiving a degree in May 2025
If you are currently enrolled in a degree program and are graduating in May 2025 you must complete a Summer Session application as a visiting student.
I’m a returning student
If you have been absent from the University for a semester or more, you must be formally readmitted by your school of enrollment before attending Summer Session. To do so, you must be cleared by your academic dean, the Department of Student Health, and the Office of the Dean of Students. Applications for readmission to most schools are due in the academic dean's office at least three weeks prior to the start date of the class. Check with your school for deadlines and instructions. This does not apply to students who have been enrolled in an approved UVA study abroad program for Spring 2025.
I’m an incoming first-year or transfer student
Students who have received and accepted an offer of admission may choose to start their program at the University of Virginia in Summer Session. If you are an incoming student, please email summer@virginia.edu and let us know of your interest. We will work with your school of enrollment to ensure that your student record includes the option for Summer Session enrollment.
I’m a Community Scholar or BIS student at the School of Continuing & Professional Studies
If you are taking courses through Continuing Education as a community scholar you must complete a Summer Session Application. Visit the School of Continuing and Professional Studies to be directed to the visiting students Application for Permission to Enroll instructions.
If you are a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies student, please contact that program for registration instructions.
How is payment handled?
Students can view and pay tuition and fees through their Student Information System (SIS) account. Student Financial Services has additional information about student accounts and billing. Payment of the comprehensive fee is due by May 23, and tuition is due on the third day of class.
