Summer Session students enroll in classes on the following dates using the Student Information System (SIS).

March 24: Current UVA Graduate Students

March 25: UVA Undergraduates (4th/3rd years at assigned appointment times)

March 26: UVA Undergraduates (2nd/1st years at assigned appointment times)

Additional Enrollment Guidelines
  • For variable credit courses, indicate the number of credits for which you wish to enroll.
  • If you are enrolling in research hours, it is very important that you select the course section that your advisor is supervising. If your research advisor is not listed on SIS, you should complete a course action form, including a signature from your advisor.
  • If you are no longer able to add or drop a course in SIS, you must complete a course action form with the instructor's permission.

Academic Policies

Class Attendance

Students enrolled in a UVA Summer Session course are expected to attend each class meeting. Course requirements such as examinations, oral presentations, laboratory experiments, participation in discussion, or the like are in no sense waived because of absence from class. Instructors may establish penalties for an absence.

Unlike during fall and spring semesters, failure to attend summer classes does NOT automatically drop a student from the class.

According to the Undergraduate Record, a student who is making no real progress in a course, or whose behavior is detracting from the course, may be excluded from that course by the instructor with a grade of W or F. Students have 48 hours following written notification of this exclusion in which to appeal. The appeal should be made in writing to the Director of the Office for Summer and Special Academic Programs. Until the final disposition of the appeal, the student will continue to be enrolled in the course and may continue to attend classes with the approval of the Director of Summer and Special Academic Programs and the instructor.

Students may not attend classes in which they are not enrolled, nor may they bring guests to classes in which they are enrolled, without the permission of the instructor.

Dropping a Course
Add/Drop and Withdrawal Schedule
  • You may drop a course and remain enrolled in other Summer Session courses.
  • Courses may be dropped through SIS. Courses dropped after the drop deadline will be considered a withdrawal. In the case of a withdrawal, a grade of W will appear on the record.
  • If the course is dropped on or prior to the second day of class or if the course is cancelled, you will receive a full refund of your tuition. See the Refunds section for additional information.
  • If you have received financial aid for Summer Session, notify Student Financial Services that you are dropping a course. Dropping below 6 credits will result in all summer financial aid being cancelled. Remember all undergraduate and graduate students must take a minimum of 6 credits to receive financial aid.
  • If you are no longer able to add or drop a course in SIS, you must complete a course action form with the instructor's permission. After your instructor approves the form, it will go directly to the Summer Session Student Records Coordinator to process. You may verify that the action was taken by checking your SIS account.

Withdrawing From a Course
Add/Drop and Withdrawal Schedule
  • Students may withdraw from a course after the course mid-point and until the withdrawal deadline. A grade of W will appear on the record.
  • No refund will be given. See the Refunds section for additional information.
  • If you have received financial aid for Summer Session, notify Student Financial Services that you are withdrawing from a course. Dropping below 6 credits will result in all summer financial aid being cancelled. Remember all undergraduate and graduate students must take a minimum of 6 credits to receive financial aid.
  • Students may not withdraw from 3000- or 4000-level Commerce courses.
  • Contact Summer & Special Academic Programs to withdraw.
Refunds
Refund Schedule

The tuition refund schedule is based on calendar days (including weekends) beginning with the class start date. The comprehensive fee is a separate charge that is not refundable after the first day of Summer Session I, regardless of which session you are attending.

Grading and Audits

Grading options for each course are determined by the school of enrollment offering the course and may be found in the SIS Course Catalog. Students can change their grading option through the first day of their class by using Edit Enrollment in SIS. Students who wish to change their grading option after day one of their class may do so with the permission of their instructor through the mid-point of their class by completing a Course Action Form. After your instructor approves the form, it will go directly to the Summer Session Student Records Coordinator to process. You may verify that the action was taken by checking your SIS account.

To enroll on a credit/no credit or audit basis, follow the regulations of your school or home institution and select the appropriate grade option. See the Undergraduate Record for academic policies. Students may audit with permission of the instructor. No credits or grade points are earned in audited courses. The cost of auditing a course is the same as taking the course for credit. Students in the School of Architecture, Study Abroad, and the Summer Language Institute may not audit any course.

School-Specific Policies

College of Arts and Sciences

  • College students may not, under any circumstance, enroll in more than two courses per session.
  • Students who have been granted a suspension-in-abeyance or who are on academic warning must obtain the permission of their Association Dean or the Dean of the Day on their Add form. For College students, academic suspension begins at the end of the spring semester and takes precedence over any earlier plans to attend Summer Session, here or elsewhere. Suspended students may retain their UVA Summer Session 1 course enrollment and earned grade if placed on academic suspension for spring; however, students enrolled in coursework outside of UVA Summer Session 1 will be withdrawn by the University Registrar (UREG).

School of Architecture

Students may only enroll in one course per session unless granted permission for additional coursework from the Director of Advising and Academic Support and the Associate Dean for Academics.

School of Education and Human Development

Students enrolling in more than 9 credits for the entire summer session must obtain the permission of the Associate Dean.

School of Engineering and Applied Science

Students enrolling in more than 10 credits for the entire summer session must obtain the permission of their dean. Graduate students auditing a course must obtain the permission of their advisor.

Any Summer Session student who does not have a valid UVA student ID may receive one at the Cavalier Card Office. There is no charge for an initial ID card, but there is a charge for replacement of a lost card.

Instructor Permission

Students may enroll in a course during the first two days of a session with instructor permission by completing a course action form and obtaining the instructor's signature. After your instructor approves the form, it will go directly to the Summer Session Student Records Coordinator to process. You may verify that the action was taken by checking your SIS account.
