Photography In the Age of Instagram

Photography in the Age of Instagram This course explores the way that social media, smart phones, and the internet have transformed visual communication.  Most of the billions of photos that people make every day are for friends and family.  But many are made by professional photographers who are addressing pressing social issues.  We'll primarily be concerned with the work of professional photographers. After spending the first half of the course looking at the photography of today, we'll move back in time to exam the ways that photographers have responded to the issues and technological changes of their era. Students in the course will participate in a workshop at Look3, Charlottesville's international photo festival.  They will also meet and interact with visiting photographers.  There is no additional cost for any of these events.
