The University of Virginia welcomes visiting students to its Summer Session and over 400 visiting students enroll in UVA Summer Session courses each year. Visiting students are able to experience Thomas Jefferson’s Academical Village - a truly unique learning community and the only designated UNESCO World Heritage site among U.S. colleges and universities. Small classes delivered in an intensive format (2.25 meeting hours each day, M-F) offer maximum student-faculty interaction and a chance for students to immerse themselves in a topic.
Visiting students enjoy all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of resident UVA students as well as access to University housing, dining services, Student Health, recreational sports facilities, and academic resources including the University’s renowned library system. The Office of Summer and Special Academic Programs serves as the academic home for visiting students and provides a special orientation at the beginning of Sessions II and III.. Students are introduced to academic and non-academic resources available to them, review the Honor System, tour the campus with a staff guide, and learn about opportunities outside of the classroom – opportunities at the University, in Charlottesville and in Central Virginia.
Charlottesville offers a unique combination of natural beauty, rich historical and cultural attractions, and close proximity to both a national park and the nation's capitol. Charlottesville is a hub for the arts, entertainment, sports, shopping, commerce and health care services. It consistently earns high marks as one of the best places to live in the U.S. and is a major tourist destination. The Charlottesville airport (CHO) is served by American, Delta, and United, and each of the major airline alliances, SkyTeam, Star Alliance, and One World. Train service is provided by Amtrak and bus service by Greyhound. Washington, DC is 2.5 hours by car and Richmond in 1.25 hours by car. University Bookstore
ID Office:
Located in Observatory Hill Dining Hall at 525 McCormick Road, the ID office, will be open for limited hours of 12:00 to 3:00 PM on June 5th for you to obtain your University of Virginia ID card. To expedite the ID process, submit your photo online in advance of arriving on-Grounds. A confirmation email (to your UVA email account) will communicate acceptance of the photo or further actions. You’ll need your UVA ID card for library services, fitness centers and Charlottesville buses. Be sure to take your government issued photo ID with you (drivers license, passport, etc.).
Admission to the Summer Session does not constitute admission to the University, nor does it allow students to register for the subsequent fall and spring semesters.
