Application Timeline

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so it is to your advantage to apply as early as possible. Program directors review each application to determine whether the candidate is a strong fit for the program.

Students applying to the Intermediate level (Arabic and Chinese Level 2) or to the second half of French, German, Latin, Russian, or Spanish will be contacted to complete a placement test before a final admission decision is made.

Application on the Slate portal

The application requires some information and documents. SLI prospective students can save their progress and continue later.

• Fill out all sections of the application regarding your personal and academic information. 
• Essays/Short Answer Questions: Each language program requires responses to program-specific prompts.
• Letter of Recommendation: One letter is required. Applicants will enter their referee’s information in the application, which will generate an automated request.
• Transcript: One unofficial transcript from your current or most recent institution is required. Additional transcripts from previous institutions may be included, but are optional.

Additional Requirements for High School Applicants 

• Medical Consent Form for Minors and Terms of Understanding: Signed by both the student and their parent/guardian, and uploaded. 
• Secondary School Report: To be completed by the school counselor/principal and emailed to the sliadmission@virginia.edu. 
• Transcript: To be emailed to sliadmission@virginia.edu by the school counselor/principal alongside the Secondary School Report.

Notification Process 

• All applicants will receive an email notification regarding their admission decision. Check your email carefully for the admission decision from the SLI.
• If admitted, you must accept the offer to confirm your participation in the SLI. Accepting the offer officially matriculates you in the SLI program.
• After enrollment, you will receive instructions on staying updated about course registration, payments, housing, and campus life. The same instructions are provided below under "Information for Admitted Students."
