Note: UVA students receiving a degree in May 2023 and any student not enrolled in a UVA degree program are considered visiting students.
Returning students who have been absent from the University for a semester or more must be formally readmitted by their school of enrollment before attending Summer Session. To do so, students must be cleared by their academic dean, the Department of Student Health, and the Office of the Dean of Students. Applications for readmission to most schools are due in the academic dean's office at least three weeks prior to the start date of the class. Check with your school for deadlines and instructions. This does not apply to students who have been enrolled in an approved UVA study abroad program for Spring 2023.
Registration will be completed through the Student Information System (SIS). Detailed registration instructions for visiting students are included in acceptance e-mails.
All students who undertake any form of academic study within the University are required to pay the comprehensive fee in addition to tuition. Payment of the comprehensive fee is due in full by May 22, 2023. If you enroll after May 22, 2023, the fee is due five days after you enroll. Tuition for each session is due on the third day of class.
- Choose your courses carefully.
- If you are enrolling in research hours it is very important that you select the course section that your advisor is supervising. If your research advisor is not listed on SIS you should complete a course action form, including a signature from your advisor.
- If you are enrolling in independent study, you will need to complete a course action form, including a signature from your instructor.
- For variable credit courses, indicate the number of credits for which you wish to enroll.
- To enroll on a credit/no credit or audit basis, follow the regulations of your school or home institution and select the appropriate grade option. See Undergraduate or Graduate Record for academic policies.
- The cost of auditing a course is the same as the cost of taking the course for credit.
- Total charges will include any past-due amounts (regular semester tuition, parking tickets, library fines, etc.) as well as all Summer Session tuition and the comprehensive fee. The comprehensive fee covers use of University transit, recreational facilities, Newcomb Hall operation, and Student Health. Support for WTJU, classroom renewal fee, technology fee, arts fee, and E & G facilities debt service is also provided through payment of the comprehensive fee.
- If you pay tuition and fees by check, at the Cashier's Office in Carruthers Hall, do NOT include room rent, food money, or "pocket" money in the check amount. Refunds require up to two weeks to process.
- Once registration has been completed, any Summer Session student who does not have a valid UVA. student ID may receive one at the University ID Card Office, located in the lower entrance level of the Observatory Hill Dining Hall at the corner of McCormick and Alderman Roads. Students must have a UVA computing ID and must bring a valid, government-issued photo ID (drivers license, passport or military ID). Office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 to 4:45. There is no charge for an initial ID card. There is a $15 charge for replacement of a lost card, payable by cash, check or Cavalier Advantage.
- If you are no longer able to add or drop a course in SIS, you must print and complete a Course Action Form with the instructor's permission and return it to the Summer and Special Academic Programs Office.
- Exclusion from Courses: A student who is making no real progress in a course, or whose behavior is detracting from the course, may be excluded from that course by the instructor with a grade of W or F. Students have 48 hours following written notification of this exclusion in which to appeal. The appeal should be made in writing to the Director of the Office for Summer and Special Academic Programs. Until the final disposition of the appeal, the student will continue to be enrolled in the course and may continue to attend classes with the approval of the Director of Summer and Special Academic Programs and the instructor.
- College of Arts and Sciences: Students who have been granted a suspension-in-abeyance or who are on academic warning must obtain the permission of their Association Dean or the Dean of the Day on their Add form. For College students academic suspension begins at the end of the spring semester and takes precedence over any earlier plans to attend Summer Session, here or elsewhere. Suspended students who enroll in a UVA Summer Session course will have their registration cancelled.
- College students may not, under any circumstance, enroll in more than two courses per session.
- Curry School of Education: Students enrolling in more than 9 credits for the entire summer session must obtain the permission of the Associate Dean.
- Engineering and Applied Science: Students enrolling in more than 10 credits must obtain the permission of their Dean.
- Graduate Engineering and Applied Science: Students auditing a course must obtain the permission of their Advisor.
- School of Architecture students may only enroll in one course per session. Students must obtain permission from the Director of Advising + Academic Support and the Associate Dean for Academics if they wish to take more than one course per session..
- Registration will be on-line through the Student Information System (SIS).
- You may register via SIS anytime between your assigned registration time and the first day of class. Registration begins at 7:00 am as follows:

- Individuals registering on-line must pay by e-check or MasterCard, Discover, or American Express through QuikPay@UVa unless they have had financial aid posted to their account. Upon class registration, you will receive an automated email from Student Financial Services with instructions. Payment of the comprehensive fee is due by May 23. Payment of tuition is due on the third day of class.
- Visiting students must activate their University of Virginia computing ID before registering. To activate your computing ID visit www.itc.virginia.edu/accounts/studentaccounts.html and follow the instructions carefully.
- After visiting students have activated their University of Virginia computing ID registration may be completed through the Student Information System (SIS). Information on SIS registration may be found at www.sis.virginia.edu/CenterHelp/.
- Registration will be on-line through the Student Information System (SIS). Late registration is possible during the first two days of a course with instructor permission. To complete late registration after the first two days of a course, send a completed and instructor signed course action form to the Office of Summer and Special Academic Programs.
Students enrolled in a UVA Summer Session course are expected to attend each class meeting. Course requirements such as examinations, oral presentations, laboratory experiments, participation in discussion, or the like are in no sense waived because of absence from class. Instructors may establish penalties for an absence.
Students may drop a course after course registration and until the course mid-point. The course mid-point for each session is noted on the Summer Session Calendars. Contact Summer and Special Academic Programs with any related questions.
- You may drop a course, and remain enrolled in other Summer Session courses.
- Courses may be dropped through SIS. Courses dropped after the midpoint will be considered a withdrawal. In the case of a withdrawal, a grade of W will appear on the record.
- If the course is dropped on or prior to the second day of class or if the course is cancelled, you will receive a full refund of your tuition. See refund schedule for additional information.
- If you have received financial aid for Summer Session, notify Student Financial Services that you are dropping a course. Dropping below 6 credits will result in all summer financial aid being cancelled. Remember all undergraduate and graduate students must take a minimum of 6 credits to receive financial aid.
- The withdrawal deadline for each session is noted on the Summer Session Calendars.
- Students may withdraw from a course after the course mid-point and until the withdrawal deadline. A grade of W will appear on the record.
- No refund will be given. See refund schedule for additional information.
- If you have received financial aid for Summer Session, notify Student Financial Services that you are withdrawing from a course. Dropping below 6 credits will result in all summer financial aid being cancelled. Remember all undergraduate and graduate students must take a minimum of 6 credits to receive financial aid.
- Students may not withdraw from 3000- or 4000-level Commerce courses.

The tuition refund schedule is based on calendar days (including weekends) beginning with the class start date. The comprehensive fee is a separate charge that is not refundable after the first day of Summer Session I, regardless of which session you are attending.

Candidates who will enroll for neither a class nor research credits and who will have completed, by June 1, all work towards an August degree should register for Non-Resident through SIS by July 1. This requires payment of a $206.00 fee. Summer degrees are conferred in August.
Students registering for independent study must complete a course action form and obtain the signature of the faculty member supervising the independent study.
Graduate Students only registering for thesis or dissertation research must register by June 15. Check with your department, since the terms of some grants, fellowships, and jobs may require you to register earlier. August degree candidates must be registered by June 1.
