Increasingly over the past few decades, anthropologists have engaged in creative processes to both generate and represent their research findings. These methods prove particularly useful in expressing how people from different backgrounds experience and make sense of their worlds. Anthropology and Artmaking provides a survey of sensorial and creative methods such as mapping, performance, drawing, film, and poetry, while also asking students to take creative risks in their own engagements with course materials.

MAJOR TOPICS: Drawing fieldnotes and reading graphic ethnography; Poetry and non-fiction; Anthropology of/through performance (Anna Deavere Smith, E Patrick Johnson, Dorinne Kondo), Anthropology through Music (No-No Boy by Julian Saporiti) and soundscapes; ethnographic film and photoethnography
