This course examines the invention and use of race as a social and political construct throughout colonial histories and into the present. We will employ insights from sociology to understand the relationships between race, land, and political power, particularly in the U.S. context. Topics include whiteness and white supremacy, racial formation and racism, settler colonialism, decolonization, and Indigenous politics
