This class is a survey of Buddhist art and architecture from the 3rd Century BCE through the medieval periods. It provides an overview of art forms and concepts created primarily in the context of Buddhism across the broad geographical scope of South Asia, the Silk Road, East Asia, and the Himalayas. Organized chronologically, the course will investigate the connection between art and rituals, trade, political interests, and social identities, forming a panoramic view of the development and transmission of Buddhist art in Asia.
