Summer Session 2018 The deadline for submitting your list of recommended courses, teaching assignments and proposed budget is Friday, November 3, 2017. Please send all materials to summer@virginia.edu as soon as possible. The mission of the Summer Session is to provide an extension and enrichment of university degree programs. Intensive formats, small classes, and increased opportunities for contact between students and faculty are commonly cited advantages of the summer term. Summer Session also offers faculty an opportunity to offer new classes, hybrid courses, and interdisciplinary programs. Summer classes may involve innovative uses of instructional technology, travel and field work, team teaching or a combination of these options. Not all courses are suited for delivery in an intensive format, however, and not all faculty are prepared to adapt their teaching to this format. Please consider these factors when developing your summer program: Enrollments and evaluations for 2017courses were sent to you as an email attachment. A list of over-enrolled courses for academic year 2015-16 is available on the Information for Summer Chairs website. Please consider these documents as you propose course offerings for Summer 2018. Consider courses that address topics related to diversity, including, but not limited to race, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or socio-economic diversity. Courses that are a common pre-requisite course, meet the non-Western perspectives requirement, or are required for a major are generally popular. Each year Summer Session III sees a large number of entering first-year students enrolling. UVA Advance, our growing pre-college program, enrolls over fifty students in the third session. Please consider first-year level courses that are appropriate for these populations. Please note that graduate level courses in Arts and Sciences are subject to review and approval by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The Summer Session office staff will work with the GSAS Dean’s office to coordinate the review of any graduate courses proposed by the Summer Chairs from Arts and Sciences. When choosing faculty to teach in Summer Session, please remember: All employees of UVA must be authorized to work in the United States. If you intend to nominate a foreign national (whether a current UVA employee or a visiting instructor) please notify us as soon as possible. If you nominate a visiting instructor to teach a course, this individual will have to complete an application in the Jobs@UVA online application system and have a mandatory background check. We understand that you may not be able to identify an instructor for each summer course. In such cases, please list the course and indicate the instructor is TBA. Please do include a wage estimate for the course to assist in our budget planning. All Summer Session courses must be listed in the Course Catalog. Revisions of titles and descriptions are not possible unless approved by the school and department as a permanent course change. New courses require the completion of a CCI form and new topics must have a completed CCT form.
